Managing and Mitigating Stress After Losing a Job

Losing a job is never easy to go through and it often comes with a flood of many emotions that can drain your ability to move forward. Knowing how to cope before hand is very important to help yourself focused on getting back on track when and if you do end up losing your job.

Taking action and looking at your options goes a long way when facing your new reality of being unemployed. Always remember that this is just a temporary stage and that you will find work again. Where to Begin After You Lose Your Job

Before you do anything else, allow yourself to take in what has happened and keep everything in perspective. Take the time to experience all of the natural emotions you may be feeling. Denial, anger, grief, and indecisiveness are all completely normal feelings that you can face at this time, but it’s vital that you don’t let them lead you to panic or feel too overwhelmed.

Immediately stop any unnecessary purchases like new clothes, movies, and dining out as these expenses add up very quickly. Take some time for yourself and tackle some projects around the house or spend some time with loved ones, this important to giving yourself some space between losing your job and starting a new job hunt.

 Building Your Emergency Fund

A great way to minimize the stress felt with losing your job is to build an emergency fund while you can. While you are working be sure to set aside some of your savings to act as funds you can live off of while you search for new employment.

Most financial advisors recommend having at least three months worth of savings aside for important expenses like food and bills. To make sure you are fully covering yourself try saving for up to six months of expenses. This will give you more of a cushion to work with in the event that searching for new employment takes longer than you originally thought.

Giving Yourself Some Structure

If you become unemployed don’t let the temptations of sleeping in or lazing about the house take over and cause you to not take advantage of your days. Also, don’t become completely consumed with job hunting all day as that can physically and mentally burn you out.

You need to add structure to your days now. Go to bed at a reasonable time and be sure to wake up as you were getting up to go to work. During this time, continue to dress nicely and professional to help yourself feel good and more purposeful, this will help you stay driven when you do begin to search for work again.

Talk with Loved Ones

Do not avoid talking about your situation with your family and friends. Many people choose to Avoid talking about their experience of losing their jobs when unemployed, but doing so only leads to more negative emotions and even health issues.

Take some time out of every week to schedule a get together with your closest friends and/or family and talk about what happened and how you’re feeling. Doing this will help you feel better mentally and can even help you find answers about your next steps and possible opportunities.

Don’t Neglect Your Health

Setting a fitness goal will help you incorporate healthier activities into each day while off of work. Keeping active is recommended because it attributes to both your physical and mental well-being. You don’t need to join a gym or subscribe to an intensive workout regime, simply going out for a daily or weekly hike or run is all you need to do.
